Hip dysplasia in dogs of varying sizes and breeds is one of the most common causes of hind limb lameness. The condition occurs when the ball does not fit tightly inside its socket, causing abnormal joint laxity or looseness that, without treatment, will worsen over time. Inflammation and joint damage are common if hip dysplasia is left untreated. Although treatment options will depend on the condition’s severity, the breed/size, and age of your four-legged friend, the best course of action is to contact a veterinary surgeon at the first signs of hip dysplasia.
Common Treatment Options
Conservative Management
There are a few conservative management options, including lifestyle modifications and anti-inflammatory medications, for treating the symptoms of hip dysplasia. This option is usually attempted when mild hip dysplasia or osteoarthritis is first made. Conservative management may slow the condition’s progression, but will not cure it and when considered long-term, can be quite costly. Alternative options, such as surgical intervention, should be considered if the disorder is advanced or bilateral.
Surgical Intervention

The damaged head of the femur and acetabulum are both replaced with an artificial one, called a prosthesis, during total hip replacement. THR has been highly successful for canines and felines with hip dysplasia and other forms of advanced osteoarthritis in reestablishing normal/pain-free function.
