Total Hip Replacement Preoperative Care Instructions
When your dog or cat undergoes a total hip replacement surgery, and anesthesia, there are always inherent risks. These risks are minimized by carefully following instructions. It is important to remember that you, your veterinarian, the hospital staff, and Global Veterinary Specialists are all working on the same team to ensure your pet enjoys the new hip for life!
-
Your pet may be given a light meal the evening before surgery, but NO food or water should be offered after midnight. In addition, we ask that you allow your pet plenty of time in the morning to void their bladder and bowels.
-
The leg must be bathed and rinsed thoroughly the day before surgery. It is recommended that you use a 4% chlorhexidine shampoo. The shampoo should be free of perfumes and dyes.
-
Please discontinue all anti-inflammatory medications and aspirin three days prior to surgery. To alleviate your pet’s discomfort, we recommend limiting activity, during this time. Pain medication may be dispensed.
-
Animals are usually admitted early on the morning of their surgery unless prior arrangements have been made directly by your surgeon.
-
Please bring dogs on a leash and cats in a secure kennel.
-
We make every effort to contact you as quickly as possible after surgery is complete. One of our Technicians may call you first with an update. Feel free to call us for updates the day after your pet’s surgery.
-
Please note that we closely monitor all total hip replacement recipients for the duration of their lifespan. Therefore, it is recommended that you notify us of any change in your address, and/or or phone number. Periodically, we may send short questionaires asking about your pet's performance.
-
If your pet is currently on a special diet, medication, or has other special needs, please bring the products with you at the time of admission.
